003 London Marathon

Why would anyone want to do it? Yet they do in droves. Even I am tempted.

A journey
of a thousand miles begins
with a single step (Lao Tzu)

This is not true
It is thus

In a kitchen
somewhere in Surbiton
or Hythe
A man (or woman)
puts a teabag into the mug
pours on boiling water
stirs-removes-bag-adds-milk-and-sugar-stirs

A little later
He (or she)
turns on the tv
and skims through channels

Amongst flickering pictures
between one gulp of tea
and the next
a single headline
focuses phantom dreams
which coalesce
into an idea, a certainty,
a fixation

upon which a journey
of a thousand miles
begins

I am not sure about the parentheticals, I tihnk it reads more smoothly without them. I don't think the inderminate gender is particularly the point, but I might be wrong. At the end, I also wonder about switching out the indefinite articles 'a' with 'the's -- i think it has more pop if it seems more single-minded. I particularly like the first stanza. It's a very strong clear image which sets up the whole point rather nicely.
