The Kings Final Word

Another "dark" one for kids or so I've been told

There once was a king
Who sang three times a day,
From his throne he bellowed
Turning blue skies gray.

His fearsome voice
Soared ever so high,
Into the heavens
Scaring the sky.

Great groaning sounds grumbled.
Bright lights of white flashed.
Wild whipping winds whirled.
Dark skies rumbled and thrashed.

From that day forward
The kings voice forever heard.
As thunder and lightening,
The king’s final word.

Personally I find this quite a good mythological tale -- though I think you need an extra stanza of explanation -- did his voice leave earth completely so people could live in blessed silence? Or was he struck dead?  If so, who by?  I think you could do with a little moral tie-in -- as is, it kind of reads as if it's really dangerous to sing badly.  If so, this would have affected everyone in the Pop Idol series...

"Dark" generally means that people don't think kids can handle something. Probably because they think kids need all sunshine and puppy dogs. Imagine how boring your life would have been as a kid if everything was ordered and pretty.

I agree with Leanne. There needs to be more explanation. It ended too abruptly and i was left asking Who Where Why and What.

Personally i don't think it's too dark. Kids have emotions that need to be expressed, and happiness is always the main one because eveyrone thinks kids are always happy. Which is absurd. As a child i liked the happy stuff, but i really liked the dark and melancholy stuff. I identified with that more as i had a troubled childhood. So for me as a kid, reading this kind of stuff was a catharsis for me.

I think it's great.
