the ones who could
talk
related stories,
but of the jokes
they kept quiet.

certainly.  there was humor
there.
it was clear
in the way they moved.
stories just got in the way.

confused, they wondered:
why was the shrapnel
so much easier
to take
than the gassing

I really like your style Norm, it says a lot more than just the words on the page.

 

I've had the pleasure of experiencing tear gas but not shrapnel, so I'll have to take your word on it.

You know I love your Vietnam poetry, Norm. Short, powerful pieces. With this one, I'm wondering if something about the gassing should be in the title so that the end of the poem leads back up to it. Know what I mean? I think it might work better than having an "explanatory bit" at the end.
