My mother wore blue polyester slacks
and sent me a package stuffed
with empty expensive things
and a few priceless photos
mostly of you and me wearing sunglasses.

I think we were on Waikiki Beach
in February 1989, you were wearing plenty
of sunscreen, and I was pink.
 
You were wearing a black Run DMC T-shirt,
which I lied to you about
when I said you looked pretty cool.

My mother laughed when I called her
to thank her for the pictures
maybe because I didn't mention the shirt
or the cologne. Just your smile, and how
cold it is in Denmark today.
