Shakespeare's Monkeys

Infinite Monkeys. Infinite Typewriters.

More in Shan's Crap (Shannon McEwen)

No need to burp him

In that enchanted hour
Somewhere in-between now
And then

No wheels swoosh by
On the gray hazed street
Silent beneath the shaded pane

Birds yawn dewy
Sleep from their eyes
Beaks still closed for comment

The sun only just a promise
In the soft tussle
Of nothingness

Soft suckling sounds
From the sweet child at breast
Before a ragged sigh

And in peaceful silhouette
My love beside me
Farts

Congratulations on your newest additon!

You should post a picture:)

2- Leanne on June 24 2008

They fart to let us know they're still alive when we're lying awake looking after the baby...

Many congratulations to you and Scott, sounds like your family just keeps getting more and more perfect.

well, yeah, congratulations.  but besides that, this poem is pretty good too. I love the poetic contrast between its body and the final line. Very nice bit of purposeful misdirection there.  If "my love" at the end is your hubby (and not the baby) I could see the last word of the title being in italics.

More congratulations and related stuff Shan - I guess Leanne's right, the farting is a form of reprisal for reduced suckling rights...

5- Laurie on June 25 2008

Congratulations Shannon!!  Lovely poem Mom!

6- Anstey on June 25 2008

I assumed that both the babe and the dad farted..

It's not often you see bathos used to good effect. Whether this constitutes bathos or not, that final jolt coming after the sublime is simultaneously humorous and deeply human. It reads like a tone-poem and you certainly capture the essence of that quiet harmonious time with subtle use of alliteration and assonance. A profound comedy in miniature ... BRgds., Alan.

Congratulations!

I think its funny that the 'fart' poetry gets the most responses!

Yes, both baby and mom are doing well, except the baby still hasn't figured out that night time is for sleeping! |
