Draft

i collect workboots with holes through space above the right toe and the protective steel
and the most colorful bits of last months department store junk mail
i keep them beside my bed, next to canada mints and comic books full of heroes.

i hoarde all the broken rings you ever won at all the carnivals you ever went to
in my mahogany nightstand drawer in hopes (perhaps) one day
when your finger is wrinkled they will fit just right.

I stash matchbooks from weddings that have long since been forgotten
in the top of my dresser in hope that I can rekindle every love's
best fire from the comfort of my pajamas.

but most of all, I steal your books and stack them neatly in my bookcase
for that day when you will need a dream or an idea of why
I love you more than potato salad (or life).

This is the gift I will give you when you break.
