The Quilt That Love Built

working in form...
I unwrap memories, like bolts of cloth,
pinking the edges of small squares with shears
to stop them from unraveling in threads,
like frail spider webs, piecing squares in temp-
lates to form a pattern of the lost lovfe
that we shared, sewing intricate stitches

hoping to repair all the dropped stitches
of love and save this intangible cloth.
I will do this out of passionate love,
hiding sharp edges so they cannot shear
emotions. I brave extremely high temp-
eratures that threaten to burn the threads

holding us together. I cut the threads
that fray in a mindless array, stitches
gone wild. I know this is only a temp-
orary fix, still, cherishing this cloth
does give my tattered soul a shot of sheer
delight. I extoll, through this quilt, our love

so that all may easily see how love
can preserve memories by weaving threads.
The pattern that I sew will cover sheer
pain in intricately inlaid stitches.
The designs that we made to form this cloth
involved intense flames that we used to temp-

er its strength. Our fervent passion melds temp-
oral regions into a unique love
that forms memories into woven cloth.
My heart bled to form these sinuous threads
that I used to sew intricate stitches
and then cut with pain's blindingly sharp shears.

Anxiously, I fold my quilt as I shear
the last piece of material in temp-
estuous anger, ripping my stitches
in two. My incredible wall of love
is stronger than anger, you can't rip threads
woven inside this indelible cloth.

Pain cannot shear the essence of my love,
nor tempt me to cut any fragile threads
that form the stitches in this binding cloth.

You are a clever sod, with your half word -- I wish I'd thought of that!  And I wish I'd seen this before, sorry I've not commented.  I'm just on my way out but I'll get back, I promise.

An impressive use of the sestina - indeed. There is repitition in the act of stitching the quilt together which lends itself to the form, and you explore the metaphoric angles with intelligence; and the hyphenated word allows for flexibility....Rgds.,Alan.

Thank you all! This really was fun to create and the hyphenated word was a bit hit in class too. It really gave me more leeway with which to build upon. I find the sestina to be quite interesting, I happen to love form poetry and feel that it helps me to think and explore. Many thanks...
