Cheesy for Children

a silly children's poem, first draft

Three Drunk MiceThree Drunk Mice

"There's mice in my house!"
papa said with a roar
"There's mice in my pantry!"
then he didn't say more.

Momma said, "eeK!"
then twirled to a chair
danced on toe tops
high in the air

Jenny cried, "Yippee!"
Sam was delighted
"Mommy," he said
"them mices don't bited?"

"there's mice in my house!"
papa declared
"who'll find'em? who'll kill'em?"
nobody dared

Momma said, "Poison!"
then wimpered and whined
skipped up to the table
where everyone dined

Jenny cried, "Nooooo"
Sam was aghast
"Mommy," he said
"kin we keep'm as pets?"

"There's mice in my house!"
papa just yelled
"They're making a mess!
They're making a smell!"

Momma said, "Get them!"
then she started to cry
up on the table
she just wept, "Oh WHY!"

Jenny, "I love'm"
Sam was just glad
"Mommy," he said
"they won't be bad!"

"there's Mice in my house!"
papa was mad
"They're dirty! They're nasty!
it just makes me sad."

"Momma just nodded
and kept right on crying
"I won't be happy
until each one is dying!"

Jenny said, "Nooooooooo"
Sam went berserk
"Mommy and daddy
are both big fat jerks!"

"there's mice in my house!"
papa said, "Drat!
It's time to go out
and buy us a cat!"

Momma agreed
and pointed again
"get him, get him!
and then get his friend!"

Jenny screamed "Run!"
Sam jumped in the way
the mice were all saved
(at least on that day.)

"There's mice in my house"
Papa said, "and now a big cat
He'll eat all those mice
if he wants to get fat."

Momma looked nervous
but made some beef stew
hoping papa was right
what else could she do?

Jenny was happy
and Sam had a plan
he'd save all the mice
wouldn't that be grand?

"There's no mice in my house"
papa just grinned
until he say that fat cat
all drunk on gin

Momma was angry
who did this bad thing?
the cat can't catch mice
as he staggers and sings

Jenny just giggled
Sam smiled broad
papa mouse snickered softly
"this family is odd."

Very silly, great fun. The changing chorus works well. I could see a small child loving this. Certainly our visiting 3-year old would enjoy the rhythm and repetition of it. But I feel very sorry for the poor cat...
