Nigrescence of Mind

He slowly darkened
Over many a long year
It was not obvious to others
Nor himself for that matter
It seemed a natural thing
Yet his mutation was not genetic
His mind drove this change
He raged inside
A victim who would no more be
He would be a man of strength
Days before his twentieth year
He realized what he had become
His fathers hunting rifle
It was accessible
Would stop this change
Permanently
For hours he cradled the rifle
Unmoving
Unblinking
Eventually he returned the rifle
Then he went outside to the shed
With all his might
He slammed his head into the wall
After ten such hits
He looked down
Bleeding into spilt oils
His skull a profusion of cuts
Dust settles upon the damp
Matted reflections
Showing a new focus in his eyes
A sense of completion
Unmistakable
Nigrescence complete
