Shakespeare's Monkeys

Infinite Monkeys. Infinite Typewriters.

More in Shan's Crap (Shannon McEwen)

Is it ignorance or wisdom?

Three thick aging ladies
Trunks unyielding

Perform an odd interpretive dance
Arms thrown to the wind
Multi-coloured leaves blowing
in every direction

Praying to the god of trees
For freedom
Yet rooted in reality
Toes entangled
In rich dark earth

And a young sapling
Just three yards to the left
Soaring without reservation
or knowledge
to what her elders wish
or pray for

Content to just play
With the wind

Mmmm, this is so nice, and I don't mean that in a trite way. I love the imagery and the message/question both. Real, and lovely in its simplicity.

This poem makes us wonder what activity the ladies are involved in - just a hula dance? Some atavistic spring ritual? Some new age activity? Or a native cultural activity?
Although you idealize the sapling's activity, it's not clear how you feel about the dancers - and this fits the title. Although I like well-defined positions, your ambivalence and the query of the title is not leaving the question vague, but merely unanswered, which is OK. It might be a matter of opinion, or perhaps there is no answer, but I think it's a valid question. Much of the effort to reattach to our 'bliss' is artificial and silly, yet perhaps some of those seekers are brought closer to their goal.
The sentence about "rich dark earth" is especially vague, perhaps overly so. It suggests a return to nature, but the rooted part implies a lack of freedom. Perhaps that's your intention - to imply that there is no definite answer, that the search moves us both simultaneously closer and farther from our goal.

The style of writing is not remarkable, but the message definitely is engaging and interesting.
