vi. Grandfather: Despair and Sunlight

death is a moment
and a journey

his son nods,
but perhaps
does not understand.

there is a bed
with white sheets
and a blue spread

there is a white wicker
rocking chair by the window
and the black iron stove
in the parlor

the moment will come
the journey will end

his son nods,
but he still thinks
tomorrow.

there is a shadow
on the porch
by his feet

all around
the sunlight
dances

"Thank you,"
he says.

"I love you,"
his son replies.
