Shakespeare's Monkeys

Infinite Monkeys. Infinite Typewriters.

More in ergo sum hominus

10. Spero

i hope

a gold band encircles my left ring finger
she put it there on a cold day

but metal expands and contracts
with the weather.

it is almost june now,
and the birds are preening
for their mates -- the males so pretty
with their colors

the females - longing for the nicest cock.

When the weather turns,
will there be room for us all
to grow?

Alcuin of York - on May 18 2007
Look, I have no problem with sex words. Also, I well understand the meaning of “cock” regarding birds (once lived on a farm). But in this poem the dual meaning intrudes and I think damages the mood.
Otherwise, its a nice write with a degree of loneliness in the mention of weather-related events – “cold day”; “when the weather turns”. It nicely expands the sense of time despite the shortness of the write, and this combination gives the poem impact.
