Ooooh I know that feeling well...you have to do it while it is still ripe... (not over-ripe) it seems. It's harder after that, but since you have your notes... it would still work...that's what I find.
It is interesting-- this process... and the span of time for the poem to be "born" seems distinct while it is rolling around like that. Much lke human birth... see men have it too!
It's a wonderful thing to have a poem in your head. Do that first.
