where the lilacs grew
i followed the little pink
spongey ball

i rustled around
until it was clear
i'd never find it
and i heard the buzz

the first sting
was near my left ankle
the next three ascended my leg
until the fifth one
swelled to the side of my scrotum.

i cried
then and screamed

until Nana asked,
"What happened...?"

i answered,
and she wiped away my tears with her hand
as she prepared the baking soda and tweezers
to treat the welts.
