Max told me that he hates when Christians
start blabbing on and on about right and wrong
and how things should be done

"I wish they'd keep their fucking religion out of my face,
and certainly out of the public square,"
he rolled his lips into a bit of a snarl
behind his soft brown moustache and beard.

Still, I wonder about Max
if  his Godless religion is so much more worthy
of space here on the common
to be voiced before the children
and forced upon the faithful by judges and legislators.

"Jesus would be so disappointed in them --
how they spit on the poor
the elderly
the children -- he'd be angry and sad,"
Max mused. I think, trying to goad me
into revealing my inner thoughts.

"So you know Jesus?" I looked right
into his brown eyes and saw no trace
of irony.

"I know Jesus. I know Jesus
would have hated this Goddam war,
and George W fuckin-Bush," he said.

"Interesting."
