Observations while eating a peanutbutter and fluff sandwich

Grandfather fixed his brown-framed glasses
sat in his straight back chair with worn arms
waiting for grandmother to present him with
another perfect liverwurst sandwich for lunch

"White bread, please. and brown mustard too, "
he said, but she already knew. she was cutting
it into quarters diagonally on the counter just
a few feet away, with an odd smile on her face

He took the first bite, and then asked for his tea
"milk and sugar in my tea, please, " he asked
always politely. She said, "Yes dear." Then
brought the already-prepared tea over to him.

Grandfather smiled. He always smiled then and
stood up, gingerly because he was getting old
and his back always hurt so bad from the war.
Then he would kiss her gently on her red lips.

"Thank you, " he said with raging sincerity
like some prayer of thanks to his Methodist God.
"You're welcome, " his God would reply
through her sweet lips and deep brown eyes.

Grandather fixed his brown-framed glasses
stepped back out into the yard to finish the lawn
while grandmother watched him from the kitchen
with a sublime smile and an ice cold lemonade.
