lactose nostalgia

I do not drink milk
even on wednesdays

i like the cartons
in my frigerator

so I buy the milk
ponder the missing children
while I wait in line
to donate money to the American dairy farmers

then, when I get home,
empty the carton
into my nice, clear aluminum sink

carefully place the empty carton
just above the ketchup
and the yellow mustard

and remember
how it made me gag
back in the seventies.
