i noticed a story on the skin of a salamander
that read like a fairy tale, "Once upon...
no, no, no...TWICE upon a time."

black pinprick eyes bellow, "far far away,"
and flaming orange blends amongst pine needles.
"Save me," he cries.

before the log flips back down
or the moisture dries in the early summer sun,
he's gone

still, there is magic.
