Iceberg

15th April 1912 - 100th Anniversary

I am the Titan.
One with Oaceanus, girdling the globe.
For five thousand years I grew in Greenland,
mantling my frozen skins.
Amassing. Accreting. Groaning in girth.

For five thousand years I edged to my end,
gouging and scouring with cracked crevasse.
I am the leveller of mountains -
the only Titan of the seas.
By Labrador and Baffin I fell,
thundering to catastrophic depths.

Overwhelmed by Ocean,
the vast Atlantic dwarfs me.
I who shaped and crushed the broken earth,
now chopped and buoyed upon the surge,
my mountainous mass inexorably dragged
and borne away. I drift to doom.

I am the last Titan.
Fear my dying path, my final contact.
Little toy! Blind flotsam in the night.
Why do you draw near?
I am the only Titan - not you! not you!
So take my cutting glance - thus
and feel its shock and shuddering rupture.

Your icy death and my indifference
shall freeze the blood in deep eternity.
