Bare Essentials of the Truth

Shannon wore pale yellow the day I first saw her standing under the awning in front of Garfinkle's. I turned my head, but kept walking, and resisting the urge to look back.

I think she smiled at me. That was enough.

A few weeks later, when I saw her again, she was in a black pencil skirt grabbing fresh fruit at the farm stand down the street. I turned my head again, and smiled this time.

She didn't smile at all. That hurt.

It seems funny that sometimes the beginning of the story tells everything you need to know - especially the end.
