Haiku for Winter

lips in the mirror
form the lyrics
silence

awake in the dark
wondering what would have been
if sleep held on

a perfect banana
half-eaten
a chimp in the mirror

clean foot
dirty mouth
both bit tasteless

mother's old journal
father's story
in outline form

half a poem
half a sketch
half an hour crying

a daisy in the road
by the post office
forgotten by everyone else

giant splash
icy slush
closed 'til next year, shucks

little girl in blue
polkadots and pink barrettes
singing my future

two orange kittens
curled up together
ignore tiny teacups

afternoon sunlight
the pink stained glass angel
dances on hardwood

picture of nana
watching from above
unnoticed

a house wren warbles
consultation with a crow
both fly fly away

broken goose feathers
one hundred hurried poems
written on a monday

a gray door mouse
frozen dead
outside the door

water boils
with the rice
or without

secrets on the road
two endless yellow lines
a lone tear drop

the open window
allows the breeze
words lost

a '57 chevy
big old engine idling
inspiration point

every day
an endless nap
the lioness hunts

echoes of the fight
past now present
we have not yet begun to love

a dozen bottles
a thousand pills
all the colors - no cures
