Stigmata Diabolic/Faux Canadian

They came across the body at noon
It lay in a ditch
Charred
Blistered
Barely recognizable as human
Or at least
Baring little semblance to humanity

The forensic team pored over it
Taking samples
Lifting trace evidence
Traces of what though

All seen before

Aaah yes
There’s the rub

How to explain the lack of blood
The appearance of new cell growth
In such a mound of dead flesh

They had no inkling
Or if they did
Refuted their own proof

The chitinous nails
Plethora of seemingly self-inflicted wounds
The lack of a heart

And of course me

Standing off to the side
Separate from the rest of the ogling mob
Quietly observing

Longing for them to admit the truth
Yet knowing they would again fail

Knowing that what they find is no body

It is simply my skin
Sloughed off
Heart in one lover’s hand
Mind in another’s
Love divided betwixt the two

And life
Well...I simulate
