Eavesdropping

At first, it’s only muffled interruptions

disturbing silence, penetrating walls;

but once it's heard, there's nothing much can

tune you out. The voices rise and fall.

Some unseen drama claims your full attention.

A shout. A cry. A silent interval.

Then sudden thud and shifting chair as someone

lunges. Shouts and blows before a lull.

It's not your business - someone else’s row.

Don't get involved. Be Switzerland. Stay safe.

The cuckoo world outside the room can rage.

Uphold your peace. Dismiss the moan and howl

of drunks or girl-next-door's attempted rape;

you have no jurisdiction beyond this cage.
