wanting to be
remembered, something more
than just a number—

I wrote a book. now, once a year
they come to visit
  my quiet resting
place, lingering but a moment— call number inventoried,
reshelved I return
to collecting dust.

ah! daffodil!
bright welcoming herald
what joy your trumpet brings!

                                                                   nones
delighting in spring's thaw
a neighbour’s cat
to the koi pond returns

                                                                                                                                       vespers
following my slow shadow
home from the field . . .
another slow shadow

awakening
before the dawn

an octogenarian
eagerly rises, prepared

by small prayer
he departs from his cell—

some weeding, some pruning
soon will follow—

chapel, light breakfast
the order of day.

outside sacred walls,
under straw hat shade

he toils, he tends
to God’s garden—

the greatest of care
for detail, does he pay—

not a chore
but a labor of love.

This poem recently appeared in the July 2007 issue of Fruits of the Creative Garden, a magazine for creative expression.

                solstice of winter—
           bold thief of precious hours
                     darkening my soul pirouetting
           the fresh snow—
oak's last leaf splitting more wood—
           groundhog's shadow
looms in the distance this tree and I
           too long empty shadows
    awaiting rebirth silvery-white flakes
           conceal the blooming crocus—
sun is hiding too! beneath a fresh snow
           the forsythia bending—
another saké? filling our days equally
           with light and repose—
equinox of spring alone in the wood
           inhaling spring's vast bounty
wounded hearts still heal until ladybug's visit . . .
just another yellow hibiscus nocturnal beetles'
           luminescent enchantment—
lampyridae nights! ... more
