Like a Leaf

Like a leaf

tumbling

haphazardly

upon the mercy and whim

of something

that can’t be seen

or touched

I feel its breath

pushing me

forward

then changing directions

and pulling me

back

to where I started

to begin again

mixing words

and colors

into gold

before I’m bagged up

and thrown away

to decay

as compost

I’d like to incorporate the “Hokey Pokey” into a children’s book I’m revising. I would change it to the “Petunia Pokey” and change a few lines here and there. I’ve researched it a little and found this:
The Hokey Cokey or Hokey Pokey is a participation dance with a .... is regarded as a traditional song and is therefore free of copyright restrictions
I was wondering if anyone knows anything about copyright and permission.
Thanks

Behind the stained-glass windows

the shadows flock within

beyond the hues of muted panes

they hang their heads in sin
When the shadows kneel and pray

to cleanse their sins away

they sing and read the book of psalms

to sin another day
When the prayers are all used up

the shadows bleat and dwell

beyond the shards of muted panes

inside their stained-glass hell

The drinking fountain in my class

played a trick on me

when I bowed my head to take a sip

before the spelling bee.

While I was sipping

the water was dripping.

The trick was silent and quick.

As I looked down I began to frown.

What a nasty trick indeed.

My pants were wet and worst yet,

It looked like I had peed!

My mother-in-law had a family dinner last night and I was enjoying a plate of lasagna. I looked over at my thirteen year old nephew and saw him dig his finger up into his nose, pull out a huge booger then eat it. It was really gross.
I guess that’s what I get for writing all those booger poems;)

I picked the plumpest peonies

And posed them in a vase.

A pleasing perfumed posy,

Pink petals full of grace.
I placed the posy of peonies

As a pretty centerpiece,

Perfect pungent pom-poms,

Preciously caprice.
I peered into the peonies

As pitch black patterns passed,

Promenading through the petals,

Unpleasant shadows cast.
I pitched the plagued peonies

Packed plentiful with pest,

Petals full of pestilence

Puny unwelcome guests.

 Underneath the words that slice
Hidden deep from view
Beneath the flesh and bones that break
Words pierce, like a tattoo When the words have found a lair
A hollowed home to dwell
Wounds of scorn crust into shame
Inside their prison cell

When the words are all used up
There's nothings more to say
Pierced into the psyche
Etched in stone they'll stay

Of your mothers jewelry box
Keeping the best for your daughters
And offering the junk to mine
As if her Nana loved her less I see the hurt in her eyes
And the grief on her face
But you only see diamonds and gold
Wrapped around your fat finger
And I hope it cuts off your circulation

Shoes, shoes, shoes,

Walking down the street.

Every where you look

There’s shoes on people’s feet.

Lots of different shoes,

For dressing up your feet.

So many styles to choose

For your feet to greet.

Big boots for stomping.

Tiny booties for baby’s feet.

High heels for dancing

And flip flops for summer’s heat.

So pick a pair of shoes

And put them on your feet.

Let your shoes meet other shoes

As you’re walking down the street. ... more

You hear that special song?

You know it won’t be long.

You hear it getting clearer?

You know it’s getting nearer.

Get up and move your feet.

It’s coming down your street.

You’d better have a buck.
Here comes the little truck.

Hear the people shout and cheer,

"The Ice Cream Man!

The Ice Cream Man!

The Ice Cream Man is here!"

“Ah! Chew!” I sneezed With my mouth full of peas. The peas and the sneeze Took off on a breeze. Up over the trees Soaring with ease, Went the sneeze and the peas. “Ah! Chew!" Sneezed the breeze, Spitting back peas. "No thank you please I do not like peas, Covered with sneeze!"

I’ve got a little secret.

I’m not supposed to say.

Cause secrets are secret,

They’re supposed to be that way.

I’ve got a little secret.

It’s really hard to keep.

No one is supposed to hear.

I’m not to speak a peep.

I’ve got a little secret.

I’m not supposed to say.

I haven’t told another soul,

Since earlier today.

There is a little train

Deep inside my brain.

I hear it whistle late at night.

I see the brightness from its light.

It clicks and clacks along,

Always chugging strong.

I feel it switching gears

As smoke pours out my ears.
Never running off the track,

Always forward, never back.

It takes me through my day,

Whisking me away.
"All aboard!"

The conductor roared,

"The Brain Train Express!"

I found a piece of gum,

On the bottom of my shoe.

I popped it in my mouth

And gave that gum a chew.

It really wasn’t dirty,

Just a spec or two.

It tasted sweet.

A sugary treat,

Almost like brand new.

Your shoes they come in twos,

Check them each and every day.

Who knows what great surprises

Sharing shoes might send your way?

Why is it some days

The words come out wrong?

Can’t carry a tune,

Can’t sing a song.

Everything you say

Comes out a mistake.

Like your tongue

Turned into a rattle snake.

You hiss and you spit

To get the words out,

But nobody knows

What you’re talking about.

Why is it some days

Your tongue can’t get a long?

Everything you say

Comes out wrong.
