If today should happen
to be a prophecy
fulfilled, will not know.
Nor will you ntil this -- scrawled
in haste and apprehension
on the back of a used envelope --
falls from an unexpected
place, sliding to the ground
with the sigh and stern tap
of paper meeting
floor.

Today I wear red, a pin, and a medal. I am
shrouded in mourning, clinging to prayer
as my siblings and peers gather
on Madison Drive, prepare
to march forward, bound
by sweaters, scarves,
-- faithhopelove --
sustained
by the greatest of these
for the least among us:
unexpected child,
unprepared mother.

Today I wear prodigal hope
as a birthright, not
political entitlement

On another Tuesday, azure

skies glowed. Crimson and burnt

umber had only begun

to massage green life

from branches. The morning, crisp,

was warmer than this.
Yesterday was Monday, dark,

wet with passive rain.

But today's skies

are clear Carolina blue.
On that other Tuesday, black

tainted, flooded, choked

the pristine sky with fear.

Still, blue remained still

here.
I wonder if today

will welcome doom

so gracefully.

A Crumby Mess

             The chips have fallen

on the floor with a crunch

            and the bowl's clatter.
The crumby mess is made worse

by the party, the celebration, those

not watching where they're going --

            their footsteps grind potato

            into dirt into carpet.
            Where is the maid?
We have none for we are poor.
            Who will tidy the mess?
             No one:
             those who see it watch

            from behind closed windows,

            shake their heads slowly, bowed.
             Crumbs conceded

to the dogs, the only hope

            for damage control.
            Let them eat cake instead.

Yes.

To answer your unspoken question:yes, Ido enjoy my ice creamdaily, sometimesmore, with strawberries, bananas, peanuts, chocolate chips and syrup, whipped cream, jimmies (or "sprinkles" to those of you who don'tspeak Yankee), a cherry on top,and -- mmm-mm --on the side,a dill pickle spear.

I know, that's gross. I think so too.

Dust if you must, but know if you dothe people who matter care more about YOUthan fuzzy dust bunnies, crumbs on the floor,a ring in the toilet, or prints on the door.

Dust if you must, but don't take too long:more time spent on cleaning means less left for song, tea parties, swimming, hide-n-seek, and crafts, less time for giggles, sticky grins, and laughs.

Dust if you must, but feel no guilt if you don'tbecause munchkins and rugrats simply won'tstay as they are: they'll grow up too fast --unlike those dust bunnies, childhood won't last
