The rain problem for me is a direct consequence of Vietnam. When it rained in the jungle at night, you not only couldn’t see a thing, you couldn’t hear anything except the rain driving down through the canopy. That’s when the NVA would probe the lines. During the monsoons, we were often on 100% alert (everyone awake along the line) all night long. To this day, when it rains at night, I am so jittery I have to get up. It’s not logical, and that was almost 40 years ago, but what can you do. The body remembers more deeply than the analytical mind.
