Making Poetry Popular

The question remains, what can we do as individual writers to make a difference? I walk into a bookstore and pick up a novel or book of poetry and I think "I write better than that person" and then I read some poetry in another book or here on this site and I think "Wow! I really suck, will my writing ever improve?"

How do we find that ellusive spot where our writing is both what we want it to be and appealing to the general public? Because that is what I think is needed we need to lure people to poetry, we need to make society think it was their idea to embrace it.
