Up in Ballyoan the grey of sky and headstone merge to cloud the view;
a wild buffeting wind
comes off Lough Foyle,
thumping up the hill
much the way it did
the day we buried you.

A sea-gull climbs and falls away;
the place is raw,
hedged with blackthorn wet from sharp showers; one or two, who mourn
amidst the cold exposure,
bend to spent flowers.

Lines of chiselled granite
run their death-rows
across the tended hillside:
black and grey and marble white.
I look for some point of reference
to keep me right.

That touch of the surreal again,
faintly absurd, has me flustering
down the lines of standing stone -
"In loving memory",
"In heavenly love abiding truth" -
each passing surname
locates my vanished youth.

I'm that little boy once more
who lost you in the department store -
searching up aisles, frantic,
scanning strange faces,
looking through my panic
into fearful crowded places.

I stood at the exit door
as I stand at your stone -
half expecting to find you again.

north borne

if we had been
dream-tied on the way
to Alaska,

you and I
there
in the middle
of North America wind washed through
Canada across the end
of time that wouldn't
come again lying at night
on the tundra
like reindeer lost
to the sea if we had been
dream-tied under the aurora,
electric faces
shimmering against sleep what perfect hands
we would have
whispered into the holiness

Be careful As you tell meThings I ache to hear from your lips

Go easy As you touch meThe scars on my heart still bleed

Be gentleAs you take meInto a long awaited embrace

Go slowlyAs you kiss meAnd breathe life into this derelict soul

Be tenderAs you guide meThrough the long forgotten rituals of love

But most of allLove meIn every look, every word, every touch...

Love meIn every embrace, every kissLove me in every way

You lived in the house of Robert Fitzroy,
captain of HMS Beagle.
We journeyed to our Galapagos and back -
I lost my faith in love. In the aeons since you,
I have theorised over time;
my memory is naturally selective:
our vivid episodes prevail. Had we been less mythical,
burning like a match
rather than a raging pyre,
you might have stayed in Fitzroy's house; and I might have chained
our connection to ancient rock;
but your shifting paradigm struck
the childish chains which broke. I've been free to learn reality
but all I do is pine for myths:
your unreal Edenic beauty;
the apple that you gave to me. ... more
