My personal computer's in love:
its VDU is wan, its CPU on fire;
its microchip can barely live
without its silicon desire.

Its QWERTY keys appeal for poems
of love that's unrequited;
all its system files and programs
are failing fast benighted.

No input logic can make it whole:
the hard disk of its heart is broke;
the ROM and RAM are up in smoke ... more

Ice would cling to the rooftops;

slender fingers clasping December,

clutching the moon in silver apathy.

The cat howled at the wolf in the dark.

Hunger having seeped into empty bellies

and the night deepened, ripe with blood;

death hidden behind every shadow.

The Merrimack smelled of winter:

its slow decay ebbing and flowing,

like teeth gnashing on old bread.

Tell me again, when we walked this river,

when your skin was warm beneath your coat

and the sway of these hips caused you to shiver,

tell me again you used to love.

The stars weep what my eyes cannot.

I sing you songs upon a sea of ice,

but the woods won't answer your name,

and my soul is too old for these bones. ... more

their far-off rings at twilight;
talk of a subterranean stream to the river

the star-splash and midge cloud;
a bulrush reed-bed skirting the island

bird-song in whitethorns;

Oh mother, where's your little girl now?

Golden brown beneath an incandescent

sun, shiver swung from electric noose as God

laughs like the terrier next door, ratcatcher yelps

and hard biscuit yawns.

Christmas carries sex upon its breath, sackfuls of

naughty whisper ice is nicest when it's

free. Note the catch and kiss of missed and may

be shush, there's good, let's spoon it up.

Mother waits with empty boxes

every year, Pandora's treasure passing by on ragged

wings -- those she wore that day when promise

wandered westward, folio in hand. Now the tree

stands bare, shedding needles on the floor.

Can you hear the bells? All is well.

Celebrate. The world rejoices in glorious rebuke.

What is one star, when a galaxy is alight? ... more
