draft
i dream, sometimes
of a yellow car
on a summer day long lost

driving toward an orange sun
so far
so far
no matter what the cost.

we slide the asphalt whip
until the tip
cracks
we shatter

did any day before
this hot rod gold
tiger lily heat
matter?

i dream,
sometimes
of a yellow car
on a summer day again

driving toward a scarlet slash
of sun
so far
so far away ... and then

i rise sticky footed
up the asphalt flystrip
until my wings
are caught

did any day matter before
this acid heat melted me
as i fought?

i dream, sometimes
of a yellow car
on a summer day
crashing

into the night raging
with violent stars
and an empty tank

exploding in silver moonlight
and forgotten
outside in the neon light
of Joe's Diner.
