Least Expected

I come to you when you least expect it. You don't recognize me, you never do. I seem to you, a nightmare. "It'll never happen to me!" Wrong. I could walk into your life now and cause such pain, misery and devastation as you cannot imagine. Yet when it's all over, you won't be able to describe me. If by some chance you do, it will be as the person who tried to help you. If you realized my purpose, you would welcome me but you don't. You think of me as a menace, evil incarnate. You wish that I didn't exist. Because I do, you make laws and inflict punishment in an effort to be rid of me, little realising that you are serving me with these actions. You often wonder what the world would be like without me. Would it be peaceful, natural, wild or whatever? Man, don't be stupid. If I wasn't here, you wouldn't be. I'm as much a part of your psyche as the urge to eat. I am you, you cannot live without human nature after all.
