It really is akin to what used to be accomplished by the term "pen pals". It is just another venue of writing and communicating. I refer to the perfectly innocquous film "You Got Mail. The couples interchange was much like old fashioned letter writing in an electronic medium. There is something about the written medium that makes for more passionate interchanges, if for no other reason we can think and construct what we want to say how we want to say it.

The twist is that it's instantaneous. That changes things pretty significantly. It used to be at least a week between sending and receiving a response. Now, it can be an hour. and a hundred exchanges can happen in a week -- no problem. It changes the momentum of things dramatically.
