What makes a poem good?

I guess that is a part of my question, sometimes I see a certain poem being "fawned" over as you say... yet it doesn't look like anything special to me, maybe it is cliche or something I have seen a hundred times. I suppose my inexperience is showing here, do I need a larger knowledge base to appreciate these kinds of poems? Because often I just don't get it... why do readers think it is good?
