Well he's not underrated here, he's very popular (it's the irreverance thing I suppose) -- but from the number of "who the hell is that?" comments I get when I mention him, I suppose that he is not rated nearly highly enough in other parts of the universe.

Leanne:

Anstey:

Well, yes, he's ONLY the man who single handedly reinvented the way poetry was thought about and allowed it to be HUMAN.  The man who brought back the satirical wit of the Greeks and put it into English alongside some of the most beautiful love poems ever written.  The man who used his art to explore the human condition and man's place in the universe using his own intellect and not the scriptures.

Who the hell is John Donne?

Well...John Donne has always been one of my heroes.

I knew his poems from childhood but in college I had a course in the "Metaphysical Poets" and Donne's verses became  embedded  in my emotional being. Marvell's too.

I am happy to know we share this.
